El Potrero Trading Post (aka The Vigil Store) is a family-owned business located in the beautiful valley of Chimayo, New Mexico, next to the world famous El Santuario de Chimayo. El Santuario is renowned for the mysterious healing powers of its sacred dirt and a crucifix of the Christ of Esquipulas.

El Potrero carries the highest quality of religious articles, green and red chile, and folk art from New Mexico. We also offer retablos (saints painted on wood), bultos (carved saints), tin crosses and mirrors, milagros, Mexican tin retablos, and other traditional art created by well-known Spanish Market artists. We also carry a large selection of Zuni fetishes as well as various containers for the sacred earth from El Santuario.

The store opened in 1921 by Alfonsa Vigil as a small grocery store servicing the local community of El Potrero. The store is now owned by her daughter, Elma Bal and run by her children, Raymond Bal and Vikki Tejada, who carry on the Vigil tradition of great customer service and hard work. Priscilla Martinez, the eldest daughter, and her children can be found helping during the summer months and Easter week.
