Nicolas Madrid

Nicolas Madrid--"I grew up in a small town in Northern New Mexico. My parents, Mary Jo and Jimmy are both artists so it came naturally. I have been doing tinwork since 1990. My father was juried into Spanish Market in 1994 and I began showing in the youth portion of the market. I have always had a fascination with the tinsmiths of the past, particularly the work of Jose Maria Apodaca and the unknown Mesilla Combed Paint Tinsmith."

"My father and I are most known for the revival of the Mesilla tinwork. I am also known for antiqued tin featuring combed glass and Apodaca style flowers. As a youth, I won numerous Spanish Market awards including Best in Age Division for two years and a Purchase Award. I juried into the adult Spanish Market in 2003 and have won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in the tinwork division. My pieces are shown in the Denver Art Museum and the Spanish Colonial Arts Museum."

Nicolas works at El Potrero and is a great resource for advice on santero and Hispanic folk art. You can see more of Nicolas’ work in the Santero Art Section.
