Sheila Keefe is nationally recognized for her contemporary icons, expressions of traditional Christian iconography coupled with her unique style. Keefe came to northern New Mexico from Washington, D.C., searching for quiet surroundings in which to concentrate on her art. Her work is minimal yet poetic and invokes a lingering mood of contemplation and reverence.

"I am a painter and printmaker. I carve into the wood with a small chisel before painting. I like to experiment with a variety of materials, such as gold leaf, pumice, clay, acrylic media, gouache and encaustic. In the beginning there is a plan that often gets lost in the process."
